Apr 21 ABC developing daytime show for Tori Spelling 5
Filed in: Career , News , Talk Shows

Tori Spelling is looking to get a day job.

ABC is creating a daytime talk show for Spelling and a co-host to be determined. The daughter of late legendary television producer Aaron Spelling, Tori Spelling first came to prominence in her own right playing Donna Martin on the teen soap “Beverly Hills 90210.” Always a tabloid favorite, Spelling has since turned her own life with husband Dean McDermott into a reality show for Oxygen. “Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood,” one of the cable network’s highest-rated shows, recently started its fifth season earlier this month.

The program, which is in the very early stages of development, would feature Spelling and a male co-host who would basically serve as Spelling’s best friend forever. The network is looking for a “Will & Grace” vibe between Spelling and her as-yet-undiscovered BFF.Who knows, maybe finding a co-host can be its own reality show for Spelling.

Of course, it is a long road from development to an actual show. But news that ABC may be looking to create another daytime talker will certainly raise eyebrows. The network currently has four shows in daytime — soap operas “General Hospital,” “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” and yenta fest “The View.”

If ABC is going to launch another hour-long show, it will have to get that time from its affiliates. One possibility could be late afternoon, where many ABC stations will likely have a hole to fill next fall when Oprah Winfrey departs to cable. However, getting the ABC affiliates to give an hour back to the network may prove to be a challenge. Even the ABC-owned stations may resist such a request because many are planning to replace Winfrey with another hour of local news.

Another scenario is that one of its current daytime shows is, uh, going away. We’re pretty sure “The View” is staying put, so that leaves one of the soaps as potentially heading to the exit. But don’t panic yet, soap fans, there is no guarantee that the Spelling show will get off the ground. ABC could also try to sell it to a cable network or syndicate it to local television stations.

Apr 8 Tori and Dean exclusive Home Sweet Hollywood! 4
Filed in: Interviews

Tori and Dean are back on Oxygen and talk to SheKnows exclusively about Home Sweet Hollywood, and how they’ve survived the Hollywood marriage curse.

The Spelling-McDermott’s are back on television inviting viewers to get an inside look as they tackle marriage, parenthood and life in the Hollywood fast lane in their Oxygen Reality series Tori & Dean Home Sweet Hollywood.

Tori and Dean sat down with She Knows to give us the scoop on their reality show’s next season.

SheKnows: Do you worry about the reality show curse and that like so many other reality show marriages — yours will go the way of divorce too?

Dean McDermott: I’ve never believed in the reality show curse. If anything, filming it (Tori and Dean)and letting cameras in our home has brought us closer together. We’re also fortunate to be able to work with same crew for the past five seasons. Our camera men are like uncles to our kids- it’s a real family atmosphere. Sure there are moments when filming gets a little rough and so maybe I’ll take a moment and a deep breath and then we’ll continue filming. We’re committed to being as honest as we possibly can, even when it’s not always the easiest thing to do.

SheKnows: What about critics who say your reality show, like many others, are simply a series of scripted, rehearsed moments?

Tori Spelling: Honestly, I’m probably not that good of an actress! Going into our fifth season — Dean and I have developed am unbelievable bond with our viewers. We hear from them and they tell us how grateful they are that we give them the real deal. I think that’s what makes us so relatable to our audience — we‘re dealing with same normal things that every real relationship goes through. And this season we give a real intimate look into our relationship.

Dean McDermott: To be honest I think the reality audience has become pretty savvy when it comes to reality shows and can tell a produced moment from an authentic one.

SheKnows: What do you think is the secret to the success of your marriage — especially in light of the fact that so many celebrity marriages seem to be succumbing to infidelity recently?

Tori Spelling: We ‘re like every other normal marriage — we’re both working- doing the best we can in our relationship and taking it one day at a time. The thing that people need to remember is that marriages implode everyday, and most relationships don’t work out. Unfortunately when you’re in Hollywood, there’s just more of a spotlight on it because you’re celebrity. We have fights like everyone else, but we also have a really solid relationship that we’re committed to.

SheKnows: Do you find it hard to let the cameras into your life? What was it like having to play out such a personal argument with your mom in front of millions of people?

Tori Spelling: The truth is that press often creates things that haven’t happened. The reason Dean and I really chose to do this show, was that it was our way of showing our truth and reality. We get to give our perspective, good or bad- and let our viewers know what’s really happening.

Apr 3 Tori Spelling Talks New Show, New Book, and Poop 4
Filed in: Interviews

“Mommy, your nipples look like blueberries.”

Sigh.

Just another day in a mommy’s life. But for Tori Spelling, it doesn’t stop there. Not even close.

The mom of two has released a new jewelry line for HSN, another season of Oxygen’s reality show Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood begins April 5th, and her third book, unchartered terriTORI will be hitting bookstores June 15th. Whew. It makes me tired just typing it.

I had the opportunity to chat with Tori and her husband Dean McDermott about their insane lives as one of Hollywood’s favorite families.

Your third book, unchartered terriTORI, comes out this summer … how is it different from the first two? What’s your favorite part of the book?

I really try to find a balance with my books to make sure they appeal to everyone. So in this one, I tried not to overload it with kids stories but you know, you always have those moments that happen that you just have put in there.

There’s a really funny story about a double stroller incident. The tire popped and it sounded like a gun shot, basically everyone heard it and hit the deck.

Dean, have you read the book yet?

Not yet, I mean, I’ve read a chapter here, a paragraph there, and if she needs my opinion on stuff, but I like to read the book when it comes out, just like everyone else.

Tori: I don’t like to let anyone read it because it’s my point of view. So I don’t let Dean or my best friend read it because I don’t want people to say “Oh, you should change this.” I don’t want to be jaded by other people’s perspectives.

Dean, people say that you’re a hot dad … what is your response to that?

Tori: First off, you just made his day.

Dean: Ha, yeah, I’m grinning from ear to ear! I don’t even know what to say, I’m blushing right now. It makes me feel great that people say that I’m a great dad, never mind the hot part. I just want to be a good dad. It means the world to me. I’m very flattered people think I’m hot, though.

Tori, how do you juggle being a mom and your countless projects?

I don’t know. I mean, I run on adrenaline. It’s a lot. Obviously my first priority is my husband and kids. And that puts things in perspective, and I make sure they always come first. But I also love working and creating and there’s so many things that I can do. And I just keep working on what interests me and that is my family. Our lives and everything just work around that.

What’s a recent “mommy moment” that you’ve had?

Hmm … well, last night Liam told me that my nipples looked like blueberries. And then he corrected himself and said, “No Mommy, actually they look like meatballs.”

I love it, even more so for a mom, so when they say these things it’s like, “Oh my gosh, you were in my belly. And now you’re saying these things!” I try so hard not to laugh. For example, we were on a playdate last week and Liam didn’t want to leave so he proceeded to haul off and hit me in the face and then start choking me. It took everything I could to keep myself from laughing. I had to compose myself and explain to him that I understood that he was frustrated and upset but that the playdate was over. I had to do the whole mom bit, but inside I was just dying I was laughing so hard.

I know your youngest, Stella, will be two this June … have you started potty-training yet?

Actually, we didn’t even have to start. She started it. She’s been off and on pooping in the toilet since she was 13 months old … she’s an over-achiever like me. She’s so into it. Her and Liam will take a bath together and she will ask to get out of the tub and sit on the toilet, and then she’ll ask for a book so she can sit on the toilet longer and poop.

Does raising a family on a reality TV series make you more aware of your parenting decisions?

Tori: Really, we work more on our relationship because we have different parenting perspectives and we have to work through it. But on the show, it’s pretty much what you see is what you get.

Dean: I think a lot of parenting is instinctual. Couples have different instincts.

Tori: I find that you end up doing things that your parents did.

Dean: Well, I’m trying not to do what my parents did.

Tori: You always hear, “I don’t want to turn into my parent,” but then that’s what you grew up knowing, especially the good experiences. I’ll find myself doing something or buying a book for Liam and then think “That’s what my mom did” and “That’s what my mom bought me,” and That’s what song she sang to me,” as I’m singing it to Liam.

I heard you were trying for baby #3 … any truth to that rumor?

Tori: We didn’t hear that rumor!

Dean: That’s breaking news, except for the “trying” part.

Tori: Well, we’re not actively trying. We do think we want more kids, but with two this young … let’s get Stella out of diapers first.

Dean: Yeah, we need a diaper break.

Tori: They’re both so young and all over the place. They need my attention and right now I can split it evenly between the two of them. Once they get to the point that they’re self-sufficient maybe then we can try for more.

What can we look forward to for this season of Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood?

We start off the season taking a road trip cross-country with the kids and the guncles in an RV. So that’s a lot of fun. There’s a lot more kid stuff this season just because they’re so damn entertaining

Dean: And so damn cute.

Tori: They’re talking so much and every day there are new little firsts. And we’re so lucky we can capture it all on camera. And just taking a better look at our relationship and trying to be a functioning family and a couple, working through things and loving each other.

Thanks guys for taking the time to chat!
